::Spanish Point was a quiet rural community on the eastern side of the Caribbean island of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory, that was destroyed in a series of volcanic eruptions and lava flows which began in 1995. It had been a bucolic farming area where sheep and goats would freely roam all the way down to the dark sand beach. Less than 200 people lived in Spanish Point, many from Canada, who had bought plots of land, beginning in the 1960s. These people built winter vacation homes and many decided to live here year around. There were no businesses in this area so most drove into the capital city, Plymouth, also later destroyed, to do shopping, banking and get their mail at the post office. Spanish Point is still in the exclusion zone, so tourists and the locals who now live on the northern third of the island are not permitted to explore what remains in the area, but they can it from a nearby hill top. Spanish Point once had a beautiful stone Methodist church, an old stone sugar mill, and panoramic views of Antigua and Guadeloupe in the distance. The nearby airport, also destroyed by the volcanic eruptions, was visible from Spanish Point, and one could watch the LIAT flights arriving and departing.
